What is Propane Autogas?

Written on: June 5, 2023

It’s a clean, energy-efficient way to power a range of road vehicles.

propane autogas Harrisburg, pa Today, we’re all aware of the negative impacts of climate change on our planet, and we’re looking for ways to reduce our emissions output.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, transportation is the country’s largest source of carbon emissions. Looking for ways to make our cars, buses, and other road vehicles more environmentally friendly is an essential part of combating climate change. While there’s much press about electric vehicles, propane autogas offers an affordable and eco-friendly alternative for American drivers.

Koppy’s Propane is proud to be a supplier of propane autogas to vehicle fleets in Luzerne, Dauphin and other counties in our central and southeast Pennsylvania service area.

What is autogas?

Propane autogas is currently the third most common engine fuel in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center. Just like the propane you use in your home, propane autogas is stored under pressure in a tank. Pressure is released so that the propane can fuel combustion engines.

Autogas is used in small-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. The Alternative Fuels Data Center estimates that there are roughly 60,000 propane vehicles on U.S. roads today.

How does propane autogas help the environment?

Propane autogas has a much lower carbon intensity than gasoline and diesel, the two most popular road fuels in the U.S. It’s also much better for the air since it emits virtually no particulate matter, a known carcinogen. Additionally, propane combustion generates about 20 percent less carbon monoxide and 40 percent less nitrogen oxide than gasoline.

It’s also important to note that propane autogas has a lower carbon intensity than the grid electricity that powers electric vehicles. In Pennsylvania, over 60 percent of in-state power generation is sourced from coal and natural gas, which are significant greenhouse gas producers.*

What are the other benefits of propane autogas?

Beyond its environmental advantages, propane autogas can significantly help your fleet’s affordability, reliability and safety:

  • Affordability. Autogas is the most cost-effective alternative fuel around — even accounting for conversion costs. You may also qualify for state and local financial incentives.
  • Reliability. Propane autogas has been around since the 1970s, and propane is a predominately U.S.-made fuel. This is a dependable way to fuel your fleet. Additionally, propane autogas vehicles run cleaner than gas and diesel engines, reducing wear and tear and breakdowns.
  • Safety. Autogas tanks on converted vehicles are 20 times more puncture-resistant than gas tanks. Plus, propane is non-toxic and won’t negatively impact soil or water if there’s a spill.
