How Much Propane Will I Use During The Summer?

You probably won’t use as much propane gas during the summer as you do during the winter, when your propane fireplace, propane space heater, or furnace are running. But that doesn’t mean you won’t use propane at all – in fact, you could use more than you think in the coming months.

Average Summer Propane Use

If you get a higher propane bill than you’re expecting this summer, you might think you have a propane leak. While that’s certainly possible (and you should err on the side of safety and check), most of the time you will have simply underestimated your propane usage.

Consider these averages for propane use per hour during the summer among common appliances in your home:

  • Pool Heater (average size about 21,000 gallons) = 4 gallons/hour
  • Gas cooktop/range @ 65,000 BTU/hour = 5 to 10 gallons per month
  • Built-in propane grill (four burner) = .75 gallons/hour (all burners on medium)
  • Tankless water heater @40,000 BTU/hour = 1.5 gallons per day
  • Gas clothes dryer @ 35,000 BTU/hr = less than one gallon per day when in operation

As you can see, those gallons can add up quickly, and if you’re not careful, you might use more than you think – or even run out of propane at some point. But there’s an easy way to avoid that.

Service your propane equipment to keep efficiency high

Another reason you might be using more propane than you expected to is that your equipment isn’t running at peak efficiency – a great reason to schedule service for your propane appliances sooner rather than later.

Routine maintenance for your propane pool heater and water heater will help you maximize the heating benefit of these appliances while also keeping them running safely and reliably all summer long. Getting routine maintenance out of the way for your furnace or boiler is also a great idea, since it helps you avoid the crowds that tend to schedule that work in the late summer or early fall.
