Small vs. Large Propane Tanks for Different Needs
What’s the right propane tank size for your needs?
Sometimes homeowners in Hazleton and across Central and Southeastern Pennsylvania are hesitant to add propane appliances or heating systems because they aren’t sure what size tank they’ll need.
That’s a shame, because propane equipment is exceptionally efficient, and propane is an amazingly effective and affordable way to heat your home, warm your water, cook your food, create backup power and more.
The Koppy’s Propane team is here to help you select the best tank size for your household’s needs and install it safely at your home.
Standard Propane Tank Sizes
At Koppy’s Propane, we know that every home’s energy needs are different. That’s why we offer a range of tank sizes:
- 120- to 250-Gallon Tanks are perfect if you use propane for specific appliances rather than whole-home heating. They can comfortably fuel a stove, clothes dryer, water heater, space heater, generator or fireplace.
- 325- to 500-Gallon Tanks work well if propane is the primary heating source for your home. They are well-suited for households that use between 100 and 200 gallons of propane per month for heating systems and multiple appliances.
- 1,000-Gallon Tanks are used for very large homes with high energy demands or for commercial operations.
How Much Propane a Tank Can Hold
A frequent point of confusion is that a propane tank doesn’t hold its full listed capacity. For example, a 500-gallon aboveground tank won’t be filled with 500 gallons of propane.
This is a crucial safety measure known as the “80% fill rule.”
Liquid propane expands and contracts with temperature changes. To allow for this natural expansion, tanks are only filled to about 80% of their total capacity. This leaves a safe space for the propane to expand without creating excess pressure inside the tank.
So, when your 500-gallon tank is “full,” it contains about 400 gallons of propane.
Factors Affecting Your Best Tank Size
Our experts will help you determine the right tank size by considering several key factors about your home and lifestyle.
- Home Size — Larger homes naturally require more energy to heat, which usually means a larger propane tank.
- Number of Propane Appliances — The more appliances you have running on propane, the more fuel you’ll consume.
- Household and Lifestyle — Are you growing your family? Adding an in-law suite? Do you work from home and use more heat during the day? These lifestyle factors influence your overall propane usage.
