Propane-powered on-demand water heaters are energy efficient.

How much more technologically advanced is your current car than the old one you replaced? Today’s washers and dryers have sensors and precisely calibrated cycles that make them much more efficient than their predecessors. Even modern refrigerators are lightyears more advanced than the ones they replace.

But what about water heaters? According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the average home in this country uses nearly one-fifth of its energy heating water. At Koppy’s Propane, we can help you take advantage of contemporary technology to enjoy maximum fuel efficiency in your home’s comfort equipment.

One of the most efficient products you can add to your Pennsylvania home is a propane tankless water heater.

How a Propane Tankless Water Heater Works

As you might imagine, a tankless water heater does not have a storage tank holding hot water. Instead, these systems heat up water on demand whenever a tap, fixture or appliance needs it.

Here are some general steps that a propane tankless water heater takes to deliver hot water to you:

  1. You start a hot water tap or appliance, and the unit detects the flow. A flow sensor determines the amount of hot water you will need.
  2. The propane tankless water heater’s igniter activates. A gas control valve opens, and the fan and venturi activate to supply the correct amount of propane.
  3. With a flame ready to heat the water, cold water enters the system and is preheated in the secondary heat exchanger.
  4. Preheated water passes from the secondary to the primary heat exchanger.
  5. The unit determines outgoing set temperatures and adjusts the flame accordingly.
  6. The heated water moves to the buffer tank, and then the desired hot water amount is delivered to you until you turn off the tap or appliance.

How Tankless Water Heaters Save You Money

When it comes to hot water generation, energy efficiency is the key to saving money without losing performance — and propane tankless water heaters are the pinnacle of efficiency.

When you have a traditional storage tank model, you are burning fuel regularly to heat and reheat a tank of water you aren’t using. These are called “standby losses,” and their cost adds up. Tankless water heaters eliminate these losses because you’re only using propane when you need hot water. The DOE estimates that tankless systems can be up to 34% more efficient than standard units.

Other Benefits of Tankless Water Heaters

When you go tankless, you’ll be amazed at all the amazing advantages your home will experience, including the following:

  • More reliable hot water: These systems can generate virtually unlimited hot water on demand. No more cold showers while the dishwasher is running!
  • Longer service life: Because tankless systems have less exposure to corrosive particles, they tend to last many years longer than storage tank units.
  • More available space: Tankless propane water heaters are generally wall-mounted and the size of a suitcase. You’ll get back roughly 12 square feet of floor space.
