Of all the home comfort innovations in the last few decades, one of the most exciting has been the emergence of tankless water heaters. These on-demand systems are space savers and produce plentiful hot water right when you need it. And that’s just the beginning of their fantastic benefits.
Koppy’s Propane sells, installs and services tankless water heaters in Harrisburg, Hazleton, Carlisle and other cities in Central or Southeastern Pennsylvania.
You can install either a gas or electric tankless water heater. Both produce hot water on demand, but we have found that propane-fired tankless water heaters offer higher performance.
As you might imagine, tankless water heaters do not store hot water in a tank like traditional units. Instead, they heat water only when a tap, fixture or hot water appliance turns on. Propane and other gas-fired tankless systems use a super-hot flame calibrated to the water temperature and flow rate needed. Electric tankless water heaters have heated elements that cold water passes over to warm up.
The elements or flames remain on while you need hot water. Then, once the tap is closed or the appliance turns off, your tankless water heater shuts down.
Firstly, it’s worth noting that making the change from a traditional water heater to a tankless system yields significant cost-saving benefits. Technicians often refer to storage tank water heaters as “reheaters” because they heat unused water in their tanks over and over again. This leads to considerable “standby losses.” The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has found that tankless water heaters are up to 34% more efficient than traditional units.
The DOE also finds that gas-fired tankless systems produce higher flow rates than electric models. That means that gas units can supply more hot water when, for example, you need to run a dishwasher while showering.
If you’re currently using a traditional electric water heater, upgrading to a propane-fired tankless water heater can yield significant energy savings. The Propane Education & Research Council found that a 2,400-square-foot Midwest home could save about $355 per year by making this switch. Those savings can defray the conversion cost pretty quickly!
Propane tankless water heaters typically have longer service lives than storage tank units — up to 20 years with proper maintenance. Because there is no storage tank, you have less of a risk of water damage in your home. These compact, wall-mounted units also offer fantastic space savings.
